This fictional story features a Catholic Polish immigrant family who winds up in Chicago after the terrible travails it has suffered during the course of World War II. Life has been exceedingly good to the parents and their three infants in America - until events in the 1980's turn their world upside down. One of the offspring and her husband are killed by a drunken driver, leaving their 15-year old son an orphan. The teenager turns to his love of Cubs baseball as a consolation, but ends up causing some minor havoc as he tries to reconcile himself to his new reality.
The grandparents and their two remaining adult sons manage to cope with their loss. This is a difficult enough ordeal with which to deal all by itself, of course, but then they are hit by another piece of information that was thought to be buried in the distant past. A relative is discovered overseas who tells a mind-altering tale that cannot be encapsulated on the back cover of this book. It must be read in its entirety to appreciate how it has the power to destroy the lives of the war's survivors, and how they try to adjust to the new world in which they now reside.
